Eye Exams Q & A

When should I get an eye exam?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that all adults between the ages of 18 and 60 get eye exams every two years. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, Dr. Andrews may recommend an exam yearly or more frequently if you have a history of glaucoma or cataracts.

For children, the AOA suggests all babies have a pediatric eye exam as early as six months old. Follow-up exams are recommended at age three and again before starting school. Children without any known eye issues can have eye exams every two years after that. Those children who require visual correction or have other eye-related issues should have more frequent exams.

What should I expect during an eye exam?

Dr. Andrews performs comprehensive eye exams that typically last one hour. These exams include:

  • An evaluation of your personal and family medical history, including eye-related problems
  • Evaluation of your near and distance vision using an eye chart
  • Tests for astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness
  • Near vision testing in case you wear or need bifocals
  • Evaluation of your eyes’ ability to work together for binocular vision and depth perception
  • An eye pressure test for glaucoma
  • An examination of the inside of your eyes for problems like cataracts and macular degeneration

Dr. Andrews walks you through the entire exam and explains what she’s doing every step of the way so you’re comfortable and can ask any questions that you may have. She may recommend additional tests if you wear contact lenses or have binocular or depth perception issues. Urban Eye Care Seattle also offers computer vision assessments as a form of advanced vision testing.

Are pediatric eye exams available?

Yes, Dr. Andrews offers specialized pediatric exams for children as young as six months old. During these exams, Dr. Andrews incorporates all of the normal tests included in a comprehensive exam along with pediatric tests to check how your child’s eyes are developing.

Tests are also available to determine if your child has trouble differentiating colors, shapes, sizes, or positions. These tests can help identify vision problems before they affect your child’s school performance or when participating in sports or games where they could be injured if they have trouble with their vision.
